Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually in September or early October. It is also known as the Moon Festival because it is a time when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. It is one of the most important traditional festivals in China, and is celebrated by families getting together, eating mooncakes and admiring the beautiful full moon.
Legend
There are many legends associated with the festival, but the most popular one is the story of Chang'e, the Goddess of the moon. According to the legend, there were ten suns in the sky, causing great droughts and devastation. Hou Yi, a skilled archer, shot down nine of the suns, and was rewarded with an elixir of immortality. He wanted to share the elixir with his wife, Chang'e, but she was afraid that consuming it would make her too powerful, so she swallowed the elixir herself and flew to the moon. From then on, she lived on the moon and became the Goddess of the moon.
Celebrations
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families gather together to eat a variety of delicious food, including mooncakes, which are round pastries filled with sweet or savory fillings. It is also common to drink tea while admiring the full moon, which is said to be the brightest and roundest on this night.
Children carry lanterns in various shapes and sizes, like animals or cartoon characters, and parade through the streets. In addition, there are dragon and lion dances, as well as other cultural activities such as storytelling, poetry recitals and games.
Significance
For many Chinese people, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time to appreciate the beauty of the moon, and a time to be thankful for family and friends. The round shape of the full moon also represents completeness and reunion, which is why this festival is seen as a symbol of unity.
Overall, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a joyous occasion that brings families together and celebrates the traditions and culture of China. With its delicious food, beautiful lanterns, and meaningful legends, it is truly a festival worth experiencing.
